Yourself and the rest of the band for our readers?

Hello! Our pleasure, this is Mike Bielenda (guitar/songwriter), our band includes Nathan Wittock on vocals, Cody McCoy on drums, Ben Lamoreaux on guitar and Brian Walsh on bass guitar.

What's the story behind "Boreworm" who had the idea to start it and when did it happen?

The story behind the band is a horror/science fiction world I started writing music for after the unexpected end of our band "The Yellow Sign" in 2010. I made some changes to a less conventional tuning

and started trying to commit to a faster scarier vibe to match the story that I was writing. Making the switch from bass to guitar and recruiting my friend Cody McCoy to shred on drums kicked the project

out of my head and into the real world. After jamming with multiple awesome musicians that just weren't exactly clicking with what Cody and I were trying to go for, Life situations realigned so that I was

able to recruit back my brothers Ben (Guitar) and Nathan (formerly drummer for TYS, moved to vocals) to help us realize our vision for the band. After solidifying the direction and lyrical backstory with Nate

we began really launching the band in 2013 by releasing The Black Path EP

How did you guys come up with the name? It’s very different and it gives a very dark and intimidating vibe, make me think of band names like BESERKER, RINGWORM and DEADCHURCH.

The name originally came from a classic horror videogame, Splatterhouse 3. The cutscenes warning you that your that your girlfriend being eaten alive from inside and turned into a mindless undead beast if

you don't complete the level fast enough were so disturbing and creepy. I wanted that for inspiration when I was writing material on my own, that frantic feeling that you have to move faster always and the very

real thought that you're failing every second you waste haha. Once I committed to writing my own horror/scifi fiction for the lyrical/artwork side of the project I re appropriated the name into my own mythos as

an homage, Since so much of the story behind the band is inspired by things that I find scary or ominous. Now the name for the band has more to do with the ancient lovecraftian creatures hidden in the story than

my videogame nostalgia, but the reference lives on in the commitment to more aggressive and ominous death metal riffage.

Were any of you guy's in other bands before Boreworm? I know most of you guys were in “The Yellow Sign” which I have to say is pretty upsetting that band is no more, but Boreworm brings it all back!

Me, Ben and Nate were all founding members of "The Yellow Sign" which we did full time from around 2006 to 2010, Cody has been in numerous projects including a local band which played with us many times

in TYS called "Algore", the band "Winterus" which were on Lifeforce Records, and is also currently in the bands "Traitor" and his awesome solo project "Cerna" which just finished recording his second album for

Domestic Genocide Records. Our bassist Brian was formerly in the Indiana death metal band "Heavy Lies The Crown".

So you guys released “The Black Path” EP last year, which has had A LOT of positive feedback. Did everything meet your expectations? How did you guys go about writing it and who did what?

The Black Path EP was written by me musically, Nathan and I worked out the story arc for the first album (with him doing all the lyrics and vocals) and took 4 songs we thought stood best on their own lyrically and

put them together as a sort of preview package so we could start getting interest in the band, we garnered a lot of great reviews online which was awesome! I think it turned out well and we have even higher hopes

and desires for the realization of the full length the songs are meant to be excerpts from!

I’m sure a lot of our readers are curious including myself, are you guys currently working on anything new?

Since the time we recorded The Black Path EP I've had a full length album written, we've been perfecting it and working out the kinks to try and make it the best album possible and hope to have it out later this year.

Much of the other material you can actually hear us playing live already including songs not heard on Black Path, though some of my favorite material is still being learned and solidified with the rest of the band.

OK, I'm sure you saw this coming, But you have to tell us about the “Ultimate Metal Hand Shake” what exactly drove you guys into making this? It’s pretty awesome! Best thing I've seen in a really long time. My favorite part was at 0:53 when you guys were windmilling and doing the hand shake. You guys have had articles written about it from people like Metalinjection.net and Metalsucks.net, were you guys expecting it to get as big as it did?

Haha! We do silly stuff like that all the time and are always saying, man we should make a video of this, or a t-shirt with whatever joke on it. Usually we never follow through with any of it but this time Nate and I did.

Its always just to make each other laugh but somehow Metalsucks picked it up and it went viral almost immediately. We were and are still completely dumbfounded that it exploded like that, Now we have all these hilarious

positive and negative reactions to read and people everywhere are being subjected to a sample of our music, really we couldn't be happier haha. The whole experience is completely surreal actually.

Alright, so what intentions did you guys have for Boreworm, where exactly do you guys want to go with it? How far are you wanting to go? Seeing you guys make it to the Semifinals for summer slaughter/All stars tour I assume you guys have big dreams for it, do you plan on touring in the near future?

Sky is the limit really, I plan to take Boreworm as far as I can. We will actually be in California next month for the finals of the battle for Summer Slaughter, which IF we win would be the start of a crazy summer of touring for

us. If not we plan on taking to the road this summer anyway and recording the full length. Many things on our plate, we can't wait for everyone to see what we have for them this year!

What are some of your main musical influences? Who got you into wanting to start a band?

Personally I think being a kid and watching bands like Metallica and Megadeth did the most for me wanting to start a band, the musical Influences are nearly endless though for everyone in the band. I think in terms of the

more "extreme" genres of metal the bands that got ME the most excited early on were old Sepultura, Cannibal Corpse, Nile, Decapitated, but so much also comes from stuff like Ion Dissonace, Meshuggah, Mastodon and

more recently stuff off the deep end of dark conceptual metal like Ulcerate and Gorguts, horror movie soundtracks, But sometimes Ben and I can get just as pumped singing along to Blind Guardian or Killswitch Engage or

windmilling to Amon Amarth. We've all been so pumped about metal for so long it's hard to tell where any one influence starts or stops anymore.

What would you say is the most fulfilling, exciting part about being a musician?

I think for me it's when that part of a song comes together perfectly, live or recorded. That moment where the melody is perfect or that transition gives you goosebumps. That moment when a crowd is completely there with

you and lost in the moment. Creating and performing music in general is just exciting in itself to me, and doing it with my best friends is even better.

What would be your dream tour? What bands would you like to have Boreworm play with?

We just got to play with Ulcerate which was awesome for me, really getting to play with any of those bands that i watched as a kid would be mind blowing, sharing a stage with Megadeth or something would probably be

terrible actually from stress and nervousness haha. Playing with any band from our CD collections would be a huge deal, its impossible to narrow it down really!

Recently I went to The Door Club in Deep Ellum to catch these guys with Fit for a King, Kublai Khan and some pretty impressive local acts that will be featured on this site very shortly. I am normally the type of guy who chills and gets pumped for the bigger acts then gets active in the pit but that show was too good to hold back so needless to say I was sore for a week. I got to talking at the merch booth with Kyle and Jimm and after that we went on our merry ways. A few days later I got a message on facebook asking if I want to be a columnist for the site and I said sure and the first interview I wanted to do was with these guys here. Well here's a little insight into the minds of S&S, hope you enjoy the debut.

Thanks for taking some time out for doing this interview for us guys. Would you like to introduce yourselves to the readers? Hey Everyone! We are Sirens & Sailors a 5 piece metal band from Rochester, NY consisting of Kyle Bihrle (Vocals), Doug Court (Drums), Todd Golder (Guitar/Vocals), Steven Goupil (Bass/Vocals), and Jimm Lindsley (Guitar).

How did you guys come up with the name Sirens & Sailors? It seems very fitting to your sound, it's insanely good and really addictive. Our name is derived from greek mythology. The story of the sailors crashing into shore to their ultimate demise, deceived by the sirens is the ultimate story of deception. In life we are often lead to believe things are what they really aren't, so we feel our name and its meaning are very relatable to all listeners. What were your influences in the earlier writing stage compared to now that you guys have such a strong and solid fan base?
Our influences ranged from all over the metal/hardcore/rock spectrum. The first song a few of us ever jammed together was 94 Hours by As I Lay Dying. We also grew up living only 45 minutes away from Buffalo, NY, where we would often drive up to see Every Time I Die hometown shows. Those shows were a big reason as to why some of us wanted to pursue a path in music. From then on we grew into our own mold of metal, or "metal-core" as some may call it.
Did you guys see this level of success coming when you first started? You guys cranked out EP after EP and a lot of it sounded amazing compared to a lot of more successful bands early writing.
There was no way of knowing that our music would catch on with people, and no way of knowing that we would be touring the world when we first started. Sure, it was a dream and a goal for us, but we started playing music because it is what we love to do, and it still is to this day. The fact that people pick up merch, listen to our CD's, and come out to shows is just mind blowing. We are extremely grateful and humbled by all of the support we have gained over the past few years. The work never ends, no matter how popular you get, you will always be busting your ass to reach new goals, but the fun never ends either.
You guys never stay still for long, any tours that you guys are anticipating and can we expect any new singles or EPs coming in the near future?
We have two amazing tours waiting to be announced. All we can say is that our friends overseas and friends back in the U.S.A. will be very excited! In between tours we are taking the time to write a new album to be recorded later this year.
So now for the question on everyone's mind, in your expert opinion, who shot first; Greedo or Han?
This is an age old question that we don't have the answer to. Many believe Han shot first, but that may all just be hear say. It's about time George Lucas reveals the answer to everyone, so this quarreling can end!
Any views on J.J. Abrahms directing episode 7?
We are very excited to see what J.J. Abrams does with the new Star Wars movie. It seems he is doing his best to remain loyal to the original 3 movies. You can't go wrong building a to scale Millenium Falcon either! Can't wait to see the final product!
Who do you guys suspect is the biggest nerd in S&S?
We are all nerds about different things. So technically we are a group of nerds (*pushes up thick rimmed glasses*).
What was your favorite and least favorite moment on tour? I'm sure you guys have seen some shit.
Our favorites moments are traveling, seeing the world, exploring, eating new foods, and playing music. There is nothing like experiencing these things with your best friends, we are having the time of our lives. Even the not so fun parts of tour, like being stranded on the side of the road because we have a flat tire, or because our van just decides it doesn't want to drive anymore, even those unfortunate moments somehow become some of our greatest memories. Touring is all about making the best of what you have, and finding ways to entertain yourself. We do a pretty good job at that.
I was really drawn in on "Straightjacket" and "Skeletons", you must really have or had some animosity towards some individual.
Well, "Straightjacket" is more about personal conflict/internal conflict. Like living in your own hell. It's about the negative thoughts that just won't leave you alone day in and day out. So that is pretty horrific in itself. "Skeletons" on the other hand is more so directed towards an individual who has wronged you. That lyrics of that song kind of paints the picture for you, almost like a witch burning at the stake. Go back and listen to that song now, and think about that scenario.

Thanks for taking some time to be interviewed by us. Would you like to introduce your self and the rest of the band to our readers?

Pleased to be featured on your site man! First of all my name is Sam Brancaccio and I sing for a band called Petriphoria, joining me is Jake “The Dog” Fish on guitar, Stevie “beanz” Zycha-Estrada on bass, and last but not least Chris “The Metal Hobbit” Cochrane on drums.

You guys used to be called Descend To Ashes. Is Petriforia the same band?

We’re still all the same dudes, minus our falling out with our previous vocalist(s).

How long have you guys been playing together? How did the band form?

Shit man, too long! Haha. Long story short, Stevie and Myself started jamming in middle school with the aspirations to form a full band. A few years later we teamed up with Chris, and finally with the addition of Jacob in 2010 has formed the group it is today.

Why the switch to Vocals from guitar? Your a solid vocalist as well!

Haha thanks! The answer is simple really, I wanted to finally hear our music with vocals. You could almost write a novel on how long I’ve been waiting for a compatible vocalist with this band, Some-thing just snapped in me one day, and I decided to take the plunge!

Your band just release a music video. Tell me about it. Its quite humorous.

Yeah it’s a pretty goofy little video, We basically just did some shots in my backyard, neighborhood, and a few shots downtown. I think it came out pretty well. I was talking with Nick Garza from The Day After Roswell (insane band btw) about our video, and he said something along the lines of “ It doesn’t really feel like a music video at all, but that’s the point, its just you guys being yourselves” which I think is a very accurate description of it.

What would be your dream tour be? What bands would you like to see Petriphoria on tour with?

Lamb of God would be insane. I mean like seriously ‘nuff said.

Any plans to go on tour anytime soon?

Probably not, I think were going to work on playing some shows around Texas for the time being.

Your new release, The Collective Mind is pretty impressive!! How long have you gus been working on it?

Thanks again man, Im very happy with the way it came out, in fact I just ordered 100 jewel case cd’s of our album. This album took about 4 years on and off to write, I first demoed the riffs for “liberation” back when I was a freshman in High school in 2010.

What individuals played the most important roles in getting you to where you are now? Is there anybody you would like to show appreciation for?

We give Tony Esparza from Fire From the Gods a shout out every 3 seconds, but seriously, He helped make “The Collective Mind” what it is.

As we wrap this up. Is there anything else you would like our readers to know?

We are actually looking for a front man to take my place so I can resume playing guitar. We plan to make a more formal post on our page later on about it, But for the time being, if dig our music, and kick ass at vocals , send us a cover of one of our songs, Preferably a song like “clover voice” with more vocal range, so we can hopefully choose someone to work with on our future material!

Thanks for giving us some of your time for this interview. We appreciate it. Lets dive right in. You used to go by the name Will Apollo. What inspired the name change? Is it more than just the name that has changed?

The name change came out of a necessity, I felt like i was growing up and so was the music.

It got to the point where I couldn't even recognize myself as the artist I used to be so I changed my name. The music it's self has changed dramatically, I've learned a lot in the past two years, and it transferred into the music.

Your a very seasoned musician. It seems like you're coming out of nowhere. But you sound like you have been in the game all your life. Where did the music begin for you?

I started rapping literally on my 8th birthday. My older brother Dboi

He's dope too and I would watch him freestyle like all day. Eventually I just picked it up and took it my own direction.

Recently we noticed you have been getting some hate from local artists. Clearly you are doing something right if they feel that threatened by your presence. But do things like this take a toll on how you feel?

Na, not at all. My team has been telling me that it's going to happen.

Especially in a city like SA, where everyone thinks they're a rapper. Then you have this new kid who moves here from NY, winning every comp, gets on MTV, and has the last name Sagod. I'd be mad too.

Do you have other passions as well? What is The End Of Space?

Yes, Directing Films, Jewelry, and producing are all my passions along with music. The end of space is a short film/ instrumental album. That I'm working on. All experimental music; genreless. The film is going to be my perspective of what would happen if music was personified, and ending up dying.

In February you were #1 on the MTVU music polls. Taking the lead against The Belle Brigade for artists of the week. From the outside looking in, it pretty much foreshadows where you are headed in life. I was pretty stoked to see your video “In Music We Trust” on mtvu.com What does this mean for your career? How did you feel when you learned you got 1st place in the polls?

That entire contest was a blessing, I honestly didn't think I had a chance.

Some of the other artist have certified twitters with a ton of followers and I'm just a local artist with barely any buzz... Some how I managed to pull a win. I look at it as a stepping stone but I know there's bigger things ahead of me.

We know you were at The Eastern, and The Mohawk for The House Of Vans this year at SXSW. Tell us about your experience? Did you play other venues as well?

This was my first SXSW ever and I actually had three showcases.

That was probably the most memorable show. Nothing like a house show man, especially during SXSW.

What artists do you want to see your self on tour with one day? What would be your dream tour?

I would love to tour with Kanye, Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, ASAP Ferg, Tyler The Creator, there's of people on the cool.

Your lyrics are righteous, but your tunes have an esoteric sound as if there is something sinister to it. Is there anything that inspired that? It gives you that alternative vibe, like The Underachievers or Flatbush Zombies.

I'm not sure it could be just a up north thing but I've always appreciated dark sounding music

Minor notes, down scale music The melodies connect with me more.

As far as lyrics I just give the world me all of me.

As we wrap this up. Do you have a personal message for our readers? Anything you want them to know or take home with them?

Time and Place: May 4th, 2014 at the most metal bar in Austin; The Dirty Dog Bar located on 6th Street.

The Prize: A spot in the finals located in California; with the winner getting an opening slot for the entire tour in which they are competing.

Bands for Summer Slaughter: A Threat to the Enemy, Bury the Rod, I-Terra, Sarcophagi and Shores of Acheron.

Bands for All Stars: Fear and Wonder, Fire from the Gods, Heroinme, Limerance and Memories in Broken Glass.

Headliners: Shattered Sun and Insvrgence.

Another day… another battle. Don’t let that first statement fool you into thinking this was just another heavy metal battle filled with local garage bands playing their shitty songs to an empty venue. On the contrary, this was a show giving several talented bands an opportunity to compete for an opening slot on the summers two heaviest tours. Of course; I’m refereeing to The All Stars Tour and The Summer Slaughter Tour. Each summer, these tours lay waste to countless cities and fans across the country; packing venues to the brim with black T-Shirt wearing metal heads. To keep it short and sweet; your band has to be on top of their game in order to play these battles. And all the bands that played Sunday were definitely on top of their game.

A Threat to the Enemy from Fort Worth, TX opened up the show with a solid balance of old school metal brutality meets new school metal catchiness. The riffs were heavy and technical, the vocals brutal yet catchy and the rhythm section of drums and bass drove the music along at a solid; consistent pace. The more they played, the more people slowly made their way to the stage to take in the bands 15 minute set. From what I could tell, the audience seemed to enjoy this heavy; well balanced start to the day.

Taking the stage soon after were local heavy titans Bury the Rod. Playing a style that can be described as technical/brutal groove metal; these guys worked the crowd up into a fevered frenzy. Heads at the front of the stage thrashed in time with the technical guitar solos and screeched vocals while the pit churned with reckless abandon to the tasteful breakdowns from the heavy bass strings and drums. The crowd roared their approval at the conclusion of the bands set; having been treated to one of the more brutal sets of the day.

Fear and Wonder from Houston, TX (featuring ex-members of Modern Day Escape and The Great Commission) took the stage next and played a solid mix of Metalcore/post hardcore tunes that showcased them as an immediate frontrunner to win a spot in the finals for The All Stars Tour. Their sound can best be described as being typical Metalcore/post hardcore: heavy verses followed by sing along choruses mixed in with catchy guitar licks, programmed keyboards and heavy breakdowns. But, unlike most bands that play this style of music; Fear and Wonder showcased a well rehearsed image and sound that helps separate them from the pack. That alone helped them make a lasting impression not only on the judges, but to the audience as well as they closed off their 15 minute set.

Soon after, local heavy hitters Fire from the Gods took the stage and immediately got the crowd moving and singing/screaming along to the politically charged words found in their songs. Featuring the vocalist from Heroinme (filling in for Fire’s vocalist); the band simply didn’t let up with their chaotic stage show and passion for the songs they played until their set was done. Playing fan favorites “Smoke Screen” and “The Capitalist” got the crowd going the most; allowing the pit crew to stretch their legs and swing their fists in time with the chaos happening on stage. The final breakdown sequence which closed their set was a stunning example of how to end a set on a high note; leaving the audience wanting more.

With little to no time for a reprieve, locals Heroinme took the stage next and picked up where FFTG’s left off. Continuing the pummeling assault of the previous band; Heroinme went wild playing with their trademark pissed off energy and party style attitude. Each song the guitars and bass slammed into you, the vocals commanded more energy and the drums thrashed about in odd; but well placed time signatures. With songs about beer crawls down 6th and shooting the middle finger to anyone who’s hurt or abandoned you in the past; this band certainly struck a chord with a majority of the audience members and fellow bands by the time their set ended.

Next up was a band by the name of I-Terra; hailing from Houston, TX. At first listen, they reminded me of your run of the mill Deathcore band. Heavy guitars, rumbling bass lines and blast beating drums. But as their set continued, one began to pick up on the subtle progressive elements of the band’s songs. The guitars had some abstract Meshuggahish elements to them, the drums had some interesting pauses and breaks and the vocalist varied his screams/growls; allowing the music to breathe and to resonate with the audience more and more. For being a relatively new band; this band kicked ass.

Hailing all the way from the Juarez side of the El Paso/Juarez boarder, Limerance took the stage next and showcased a brand of technical guitar playing mixed with some interesting time signatures that, surprisingly; went very well with the brutal nature of the guttural/Deathcore style vocals. Their set contained a lot of energy; which in the end saw them win over those in attendance as the shouts of approval grew louder and louder at the end of each of their songs. I must say, this writer was very impressed not only with their set; but with their professionalism and courage playing so far away from home. Amazing performance guys.

Rounding out the last of the All Stars competitors was Memories in Broken Glass; a seasoned band out of San Antonio, TX. One of the hardest working bands in the Texas metal scene, it showed as they played songs from their well received EP “Recode” and even one new song they’d been working on. Their vocalist got the crowd moving and singing along to the words as the band played its unique style of technical/ambient metal; adding touches of electronic sound effects a la Born of Osiris and Veil of Maya. All in all, this was another by the numbers performance from this band; further showcasing them as one of the top unsigned Texas underground bands and as one of the front runners to advance to the finals in California.

Next up were Sarcophagi; a band hailing from Pensacola, Florida. Having never heard this band before seeing them play, I was immediately drawn in by the utter heaviness of their sound. Playing a style of metal that can best be described as technical Deathcore; this band blasted through song after song of brutal tunes that seemed to surprise everyone with how heavy and well constructed they were. The crowd soon went all in as well; showing their appreciation vocally as well as by head banging and hardcore dancing until the close of their set. For me personally; definitely one of my favorite performances of the night.

Closing out the competing Summer Slaughter bands was Shores of Acheron; a band out of Baton Rouge, LA. What became immediately apparent at the start of their set was this: these guys love their death metal slamming and groove laden. But what made the band interesting was their use of eerie guitar melodies mixed in with the typical riffs found in most death metal. Sections of their songs varied from fast paced and aggressive; to haunting and evil. Couple that with brutal vocals, technical drum work, and booming bass lines, you have yourself a band that knows how to write slamming music in a way that’s not only brutal; but also memorable to the audience and judges.

As the judges began to deliberate on which bands would advance, the audience was treated to two Alumni Battle Headliners: Shattered Sun and Insvrgence. Both bands currently are making a lot of noise in the Texas underground; so it was only fitting that these two battle hardened bands should close out the day filled with brutal and memorable performances.

First up was Shattered Sun; a band out of Alice, TX who play melodic heavy metal thrash. Having seen this band numerous times; I was thrilled to hear that their set would consist of all new songs from their debut full length album. And boy; did they not disappoint. Each song was heavy and filled with their trademark catchiness; which is made up of wicked guitar solos, machine gun drumming and bass lines, keys that add a melodic side to the brutality and vocals that are a mix of growls and sing along choruses. The guys were simply on point and played a pretty flawless set that saw the exhausted crowd get renewed with new energy and vigor. Keep an eye out for this band; big things are certainly in the works for them in the near future.

Lastly; local hardcore guys in Insvrgence took the stage and laid waste to all those that remained standing at the Dirty Dog Bar. Playing hardcore filled to the brim with conviction and meaning; Insvrgence played fan favorites “Nightmares”, “Cardiac Arrest” , “Justification” and “Common Sense” from their debut album “The Tower” along with a new song showcasing the continued growth of the band. The pit crew went wild to each and every song; often screaming into the outstretched microphone word for word while laying waste to their exercised demons in the pit. When set closer “Dani Grace” began, the audience summoned all their remaining energy; getting more wild and passionate in the process. By songs end, the audience as well as the band had left it all out there on the stage or in the pit; which in my opinion was a perfect and fitting way to close the night.

Shortly after Insvrgence set; the winners advancing to California for the finals were announced. For the All Stars: Fear and Wonder, Fire from the Gods, Heroinme and Memories in Broken Glass. For the Summer Slaughter: I-Terra and Shores of Acheron. Although some bands didn’t advance; there was a silver lining that surrounded everyone in attendance. We all had joined together for a special night of metal. We made new friends, new contacts and got to celebrate as a group of people all united for one purpose: heavy metal music. And that above all else is what made this night a special night for everyone.
